Caustic soda

What is caustic soda?

Baking soda or caustic soda is a solid, white, odorless substance that is available in powdered or granulated forms. One of the properties of caustic soda is the ease of absorbing moisture from the air. Therefore, it should be covered with the necessary protective covers and well protected during transportation. It should be noted that the beneficial effect has a corrosive effect in contact with the skin. In order to prevent the burning effects of this substance, gloves and safety equipment should be used when using it.

Baking soda or sodium hydroxide is very soluble in water, and this dissolution is an exothermic process. Actually, due to the dissolution of caustic soda in water, a lot of heat is released. Sodium bicarbonate has lower solubility in ethanol and methanol and will not dissolve in ether and other non-polar solutions. The properties of soda perak are used as one of the most useful ionic compounds in various industries such as water treatment and factories producing detergents and soaps.

Properties of caustic soda

One of the characteristics of caustic soda is its high alkalinity. For this reason, it is used as a pH regulator.

Caustic soda in the form of flakes has a melting temperature of 318 degrees Celsius and a density of 2.13 grams per cubic centimeter.

Sodium hydroxide is white and odorless in solid state and it dissolves in hot water. Therefore, entering the water leads to an increase in its temperature.

One of the properties of caustic soda is its high ability to absorb moisture and carbon dioxide. For this reason, it is placed in moisture-resistant packaging.

Caustic soda will cause burns in contact with the skin. In addition, its contact with the eyes leads to blindness. If this chemical comes into contact with the skin, the skin should be washed with plenty of water for at least 10 to 20 minutes.

Uses of caustic soda in textile

The very strong alkaline properties of caustic soda and its high degreasing power have led to the use of this substance in the textile industry. Baking soda or caustic soda is used to improve dyeing and fiber production in textiles. The presence of fats in the dyeing process leads to a decrease in its quality and transparency. For this reason, these fats should be removed using substances such as sodium hydroxide. In addition, caustic soda is used to descale sheep’s wool and produce good quality fibers.

The use of perak soda in the food industry

Caustic soda is one of the strongest alkaline substances that has a high power in removing fats. After contact with water or moisture, the soda ash dissolves in it and produces a lot of heat. This heat causes fats to melt. Due to these properties, soda is used in industries. In food industries, slaughterhouses, and dairy industries, the use of fat perk in degreasing devices is very important. Using caustic soda not only increases the speed of work, but its consumption is also economical.
