Application of methanol

Methanol (in English: methanol) appears as a relatively volatile, colorless liquid with a pungent, slightly sweet odor similar to that of ethyl alcohol. Mixes perfectly with water. Its vapors are slightly heavier than air. Therefore, they may travel some distance to the ignition source and return back. Any accumulation of its vapors in confined spaces, such as buildings or sewers, may explode if ignited. It is used to make chemicals, remove water from fuel in cars and airplanes, as a solvent for paints and plastics, and as an ingredient in a wide variety of products.

In the following, we will further introduce the use of methanol and explain it further. Stay with Aban Petro and I hope you enjoy reading this article.

What is methanol?

Methanol (CH3OH), also known as wood alcohol, methyl alcohol, methanol alcohol (Methylol), is one of the simplest organic compounds called alcohol, which consists of a methyl group (CH3) linked to a hydroxy group (OH). In the past, this compound was produced from the destructive distillation of wood. The modern method of methanol preparation is based on the direct combination of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas in the presence of a catalyst. Increasingly, syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide derived from biomass, is used to produce it.
Methanol is a colorless liquid that boils at 64.96 °C (148.93 °F) and solidifies at -93.9 °C (-137 °F).

It forms explosive mixtures with air and burns with a non-luminous flame. It is completely miscible in water. This substance has a smell similar to ethyl alcohol, the poison of alcoholic beverages. But, it is a dangerous poison. Many cases of blindness or death have resulted from drinking mixtures containing it.

Pure methanol is an important material in chemical synthesis. Its derivatives are used in large quantities to make a large number of compounds, including many important synthetic dyes, resins, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes. Large amounts of it are converted to dimethylaniline for dyes and to formaldehyde for synthetic resins. Other uses of methanol include:

_ It is used in car antifreeze, in rocket fuel and as a general solvent.

It is a potentially important substitute for gasoline in automotive vehicles. Because it is a high octane and clean fuel.

Methanol obtained from wood is used to convert industrial ethyl alcohol. This alcohol is unsuitable for drinking.

_ In wastewater treatment plants: adding to wastewater provides a food source for disinfecting bacteria.

_ It is used as a determining factor in “polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis”.

_ Fuel cells

_ As a precursor in the preparation of raw materials such as acetic acid

_ One of the cleaning elements of paint and varnish is used.

Methanol is primarily produced from coal and excess natural gas. It is used to produce methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), acetic acid and formaldehyde. It has general solvent and antifreeze applications and can be used to fuel internal combustion engines, although it is usually blended with gasoline.

Formaldehyde is used in compressed wood products, disinfectants and adhesives. It is also used to make chemicals for construction, automotive, healthcare and consumer products and applications. Asia and the Pacific region have the most consumption in this field. (60% of global consumption)

Application of methanol in antifreeze

It is used as an antifreeze for car radiators, a component of gasoline (as an antifreeze agent and octane booster), and as a fuel for picnic stoves.

The unique chemical properties of methanol lower the base freezing point of water and raise its boiling point. Therefore, it is used in the antifreeze industry.
The use of methanol as a chemical solvent

Methanol is primarily used as an industrial solvent for inks, resins, adhesives, paints, and in the preparation and manufacture of pharmaceutical products.

It is used as a solvent in the manufacture of cholesterol, streptomycin, vitamins, hormones and other drugs.

Use of methanol as fuel

The use of methanol as a fuel has been considered. Because this fuel is a type of renewable resource.

This mixture can be mixed with gasoline. This action reduces the resulting pollutants compared to regular gasoline.

It is used as an alternative engine fuel.

Use of methanol as fuel

Methanol as food metabolism

Wood alcohol is naturally present in foods such as fruits and vegetables. This alcohol can be produced in our digestive system. and cause better food metabolism.

Defrosting windshields

It is forbidden to use antifreeze to defrost the car windshield. Because it is dangerous for humans.
